Saturday 17th June brought about much excitement and adrenaline for four members of Spirit Taekwon-Do as they made the long and tiring journey to Scotland to compete in the Scottish Championships 2006. The journey was very eventful however, this by no means detracted from the positive atmosphere of the group.
The tournament began on the Sunday with an opening speech from Master Nicholls and Miss Catherine Divine (V Degree) and was quickly followed by black belt patterns and sparring.
The technical content of these patterns was of a very high standard and so it is of great achievement to announce that Spirit competitors did very well with Cain Sabum Nim Geh receiving 3rd place in his division, Danny Welland receiving 2nd place and Cheryl Cooke receiving 3rd place in their division. Rob Thompson also kept up the standard in the coloured belt division by receiving a well deserved 1st place.
Moving on to sparring, again very successful with Cain Sabum Nim Geh receiving 2nd place, Danny Welland receiving 3rd place, Cheryl Cooke receiving 2nd place and Rob Thompson another 1st place.
For Danny Welland the winning didn’t end there as he also picked up a bronze in the male power test event.
All in all for a second year running the Scottish tournament was a great success and a big thank you must be extended to all the organisers and people who helped out to make the weekend definitely one to remember.

Martial arts reading – before you begin
Do you know why you want to take up martial arts? At Spirit Taekwondo Academies, the experts believe that there are some very straightforward reasons why people choose to take up martial arts. Reading the thoughts of these experienced practitioners and trainers could help you to make up your mind about which area you want to study:
• For fitness – for many people, fitness is the main reason for taking up martial arts. Reading what some people say about these sports, it’s easy to see why. Martial arts training is physically tough and is a great way to get fit. Many people train several times a week, and martial arts offer a whole-body workout.
• For the mind – martial arts may be very physical but they all usually have a spiritual side too. Martial arts reading materials show that many forms of martial arts are closely connected with the culture and beliefs of those people who developed, practised and trained in these arts, and the spiritual element draws many new people to the discipline.
• For self-defence – of course, self-defence is an important reason for considering martial arts. Reading books and watching films can show the extreme side of martial arts, but the truth is that you will learn how to defend yourself if you have to. For many people, this is the most important reason to take up martial arts.
