5 Reasons To Consider Martial Arts Training

Determining Your Training Goals

The first thing to do when considering taking a martial arts class is to determine what you hope to gain from martial arts training. Everyone has a reason for their interest in the martial arts, and it's important to know your options and goals so that you can really get the most out of your training and have a postive experience. Below are some common reasons for studying the martial arts and more information on our programmes & how they will fit your reasons to join.

Fitness/Fun Related Interests

The most common reason for training that I hear is that people want to have fun and get in better physical condition, whether that is losing weight, getting stronger or just getting more active. Martial arts is a great way to get in shape and can be really fun to learn. It will improve endurance, strength, flexibility, speed, coordination, balance and helps with overall stress levels.

While all martial our training involves some amount of physical training, our programmes are great to try for overall physical fitness:

  * Taekwon-Do - Junior Taekwon-Do - Kids Kickers - Lil Dragons

Self Defence

The second most common reason for studying martial arts is self defence; a very valid and important reason for learning. Our Taekwon-Do programmes teach excellent self defense, with techniques that WORK!

Interest In Traditional or Cultural Arts

Many people take great interest in the cultural or traditional aspects of martial arts training. They enjoy the discipline, traditions and methods of very traditional arts. A traditional style will feature very structured training, and many people love that aspect as well. There are many traditional martial arts styles out there. Our ITF Taekwon-Do is the original and traditional art of General Choi.

Sport & Competition

Thanks to an increased presence in movies and television, a rapidly growing reason for training is for the flashy HIGH KICKS, which combines martial basics with difficult jump kicks, flips and speedy hand combinations, done primarily for competitions. Our sport specific programmes have a sport focus and teach a traditional & modified version of a traditional art, While competition is not the main feature of our academies, we have specific classes tailored for Sport Taekwon-Do Sparring.

Martial arts reading – before you begin

Do you know why you want to take up martial arts? At Spirit Taekwondo Academies, the experts believe that there are some very straightforward reasons why people choose to take up martial arts. Reading the thoughts of these experienced practitioners and trainers could help you to make up your mind about which area you want to study:

• For fitness – for many people, fitness is the main reason for taking up martial arts. Reading what some people say about these sports, it’s easy to see why. Martial arts training is physically tough and is a great way to get fit. Many people train several times a week, and martial arts offer a whole-body workout.

• For the mind – martial arts may be very physical but they all usually have a spiritual side too. Martial arts reading materials show that many forms of martial arts are closely connected with the culture and beliefs of those people who developed, practised and trained in these arts, and the spiritual element draws many new people to the discipline.

• For self-defence – of course, self-defence is an important reason for considering martial arts. Reading books and watching films can show the extreme side of martial arts, but the truth is that you will learn how to defend yourself if you have to. For many people, this is the most important reason to take up martial arts.
