On Sunday 6th March, Mr. Smith took a team of 4 (including himself) from Spirit Tkd Surrey to represent Spirit Tkd at the 3rd Midlands ITF Open. After a long, early morning driving in the 'blizzard'... its was quite strong snow on the M25, we arrived keen to get started.
Black Belts were on first, following well executed patterns, it was on to sparring, with Mr. Larkin fighting well to take 3rd place, and Mr. Smith taking 2nd only loosing narrowly to a World class opponent.
Then onto coloured belts, juniors first, Ben Smith gave an excellent account of himself only just missing a medal spot in patterns, but fought brilliantly to win himself a Silver at sparring, again, only narrowly loosing in the final to a much bigger opponent.

Richard Tamara gave a great display in patterns having to compete in a decider for a Bronze medal and winning convincingly, then after waiting all day for the last category also took Gold in Sparring.
So after a long day and much excitement, 5 trophies for Spirit between a team of 4 was a great accomplishment! Well Done to All!

Martial arts reading – before you begin
Do you know why you want to take up martial arts? At Spirit Taekwondo Academies, the experts believe that there are some very straightforward reasons why people choose to take up martial arts. Reading the thoughts of these experienced practitioners and trainers could help you to make up your mind about which area you want to study:
• For fitness – for many people, fitness is the main reason for taking up martial arts. Reading what some people say about these sports, it’s easy to see why. Martial arts training is physically tough and is a great way to get fit. Many people train several times a week, and martial arts offer a whole-body workout.
• For the mind – martial arts may be very physical but they all usually have a spiritual side too. Martial arts reading materials show that many forms of martial arts are closely connected with the culture and beliefs of those people who developed, practised and trained in these arts, and the spiritual element draws many new people to the discipline.
• For self-defence – of course, self-defence is an important reason for considering martial arts. Reading books and watching films can show the extreme side of martial arts, but the truth is that you will learn how to defend yourself if you have to. For many people, this is the most important reason to take up martial arts.
