WHAT IS TAEKWON-DO....?
Taekwon-Do is a modern Art of Self Defence founded by Grand Master Choi Hong Hi who was a General in the Korean army. He developed Taekwon-Do by researching other Martial Arts and by using principles of Modern science to design techniques which have maximum power and effectiveness.
TAEKWON-DO
Taekwon-Do is a version of an ancient form of unarmed combat practised for many centuries in the Orient. Taekwon-Do became perfected in it's present form in Korea.
Translated from Korean 'Tae literally means to jump, kick or smash with foot. 'Kwon means a fist chiefly to punch or destroy with the hand or fist. 'Do means art, way or method. Taekwon-Do indicates the technique of unarmed combat for self-defence, involving the skilled application of punches, kicks, blocks and interception with the hand, arms and feet to the rapid destruction of the opponent.
After visiting Souh Korea in 2004 to participate in the ITF World Championships for the UK I saw first hand how important Taekwon-Do is to the Korean people, it is more than a mere use of skilled movements. It also implies a way of thinking and life, particularly in instilling a concept and spirit of strict self-imposed discipline and an ideal of noble moral re-armament.
In these days of violence and intimidation, which seem to plague our modern societies, Taekwon-Do enables the weak to possess a fine weapon to defend himself or herself and defeat the opponent as well. When wrongly applied it can be a lethal weapon.
Taekwon-Do has grown in popularity and is taught in nearly every country in the world. It is greatly renowned for it's spectacular and dynamic kicking techniques. This has led to the misconception that Taekwon-Do is just a kicking art. Since the legs are more powerful than the arms, Taekwon-Do does make extensive use of the legs but kicks make up only a small fraction of the total number of Taekwon-Do techniques. There are also blocks, punches, and strikes with the hands or arms as well as basic throws and take downs. The range of techniques cater for all types of situations including defending against more than one opponent, and against weapons.
WHO CAN PRACTICE TAEKWON-DO...?
Taekwon-Do is for anyone who wishes to learn it, no matter what age you are. You can benefit from Taekwon-Do. If you are male or female, young or old, whatever your build. People who have a disability or suffer from a previous injury can still benefit from Taekwon-Do as the training can be differentiated to suit your ability. As long you inform your instructor about your limitations he/she will be able to recommend safe training activities for you.
Moral Culture...?
Taekwon-Do is not just physical training, it involves mental and spiritual training as well. Taekwon-Do has moral culture, which builds character and teaches students to become ethical. Through training you will learn the 5 Tenets of Taekwon-Do namely:
Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit.

Martial arts reading – before you begin
Do you know why you want to take up martial arts? At Spirit Taekwondo Academies, the experts believe that there are some very straightforward reasons why people choose to take up martial arts. Reading the thoughts of these experienced practitioners and trainers could help you to make up your mind about which area you want to study:
• For fitness – for many people, fitness is the main reason for taking up martial arts. Reading what some people say about these sports, it’s easy to see why. Martial arts training is physically tough and is a great way to get fit. Many people train several times a week, and martial arts offer a whole-body workout.
• For the mind – martial arts may be very physical but they all usually have a spiritual side too. Martial arts reading materials show that many forms of martial arts are closely connected with the culture and beliefs of those people who developed, practised and trained in these arts, and the spiritual element draws many new people to the discipline.
• For self-defence – of course, self-defence is an important reason for considering martial arts. Reading books and watching films can show the extreme side of martial arts, but the truth is that you will learn how to defend yourself if you have to.
