III CHERYL COOKE
I started TaeKwon-Do in May 2002 originally to improve my fitness and was surprised in September 2005 to find myself stood in front of The Imperial Black Belt degree panel, including Master Nicholls, taking my 1st degree black belt grading.
This at the time had to be the most nerve racking experience of my Taekwon-Do journey however, it also allowed me to reflect on all that I had achieved so far (tournaments, seminars etc) and at what I had left to achieve.
I used to believe that when you reach black belt you couldnt go any further however, now I feel there are many more exciting challenges to complete and that feeling alone makes me hungry to carry on.
I always try to put in all that I can give with Taekwon-Do be it from a training perspective, a teaching perspective or a competing perspective and even though each aspect brings about its own trials and tribulations I feel this enhances my own character as an individual, for example, the ability to persevere.
It is very easy at times to give up when a tournament doesn't go your way or you feel you cant administer a technique correctly however, by persevering and achieving in the Dojang (Training hall) this has also led me to reflect on my life outside of training and when something doesn't quite go my way instead of giving up I now try and carry on, knowing that whether I achieve or fail I will be stronger because I have tried.
Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought.
Albert Szent-Gyorgyi:
As an instructor I now have the chance to pass on to others the knowledge my instructor has passed on to me.
Having learnt the practical aspect and the enjoyment of the art and much more than that,
One of my goals in Taekwon-Do is to strengthen peoples' characters in the way that
Taekwon-Do has strengthened my character and perseverance.
Only a single blow...

Martial arts reading – before you begin
Do you know why you want to take up martial arts? At Spirit Taekwondo Academies, the experts believe that there are some very straightforward reasons why people choose to take up martial arts. Reading the thoughts of these experienced practitioners and trainers could help you to make up your mind about which area you want to study:
• For fitness – for many people, fitness is the main reason for taking up martial arts. Reading what some people say about these sports, it’s easy to see why. Martial arts training is physically tough and is a great way to get fit. Many people train several times a week, and martial arts offer a whole-body workout.
• For the mind – martial arts may be very physical but they all usually have a spiritual side too. Martial arts reading materials show that many forms of martial arts are closely connected with the culture and beliefs of those people who developed, practised and trained in these arts, and the spiritual element draws many new people to the discipline.
• For self-defence – of course, self-defence is an important reason for considering martial arts. Reading books and watching films can show the extreme side of martial arts, but the truth is that you will learn how to defend yourself if you have to. For many people, this is the most important reason to take up martial arts.
