We held our annual Black Belt grading on the 24th of September 2006. Spirit Taekwon-Do members in attendance where Joel Wilson, Thomas Pearce, David Griggs, Paul Jackson, Damian Smith and Amber Hitchins.
As expected another tough grading, Master Nicholls put all students through the whole syllabus ranging from
Chonji – Eui-Am, Jayoo Jurugi – Pil Sung Yee Jung, White to 2nd Degree Kick Patterns, step sparring 1-3, free sparring and finishing off with power testing (breaking).
Joel Wilson passed with Distinction, which I must say is an excellent achievement for Spirit Taekwon-Do and Joel Wilson.
Joel feels very proud of his Accolade, which is deserved, due to all the work he has put in over the past 18 months.
For many, undertaking an Imperial black belt grading will be the most physically and mentally challenging event that they will ever complete in their life time. The Imperial grading syllabus is designed to be challenging, but should not be considered difficult with proper preparation. Anyone has the potential to excel - no athletic genetic predisposition is required (granted, it will help though!). For the majority, the aim will be to survive and pass the grading which is all well and good, but there is no reason why one can’t aim for an A-pass or even a pass with distinction – with proper preparation this goal will be more realistic and definitely achievable!
The words of Muhammad Ali are particularly relevant:
"The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses; it is won behind the scenes, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights".

Martial arts reading – before you begin
Do you know why you want to take up martial arts? At Spirit Taekwondo Academies, the experts believe that there are some very straightforward reasons why people choose to take up martial arts. Reading the thoughts of these experienced practitioners and trainers could help you to make up your mind about which area you want to study:
• For fitness – for many people, fitness is the main reason for taking up martial arts. Reading what some people say about these sports, it’s easy to see why. Martial arts training is physically tough and is a great way to get fit. Many people train several times a week, and martial arts offer a whole-body workout.
• For the mind – martial arts may be very physical but they all usually have a spiritual side too. Martial arts reading materials show that many forms of martial arts are closely connected with the culture and beliefs of those people who developed, practised and trained in these arts, and the spiritual element draws many new people to the discipline.
• For self-defence – of course, self-defence is an important reason for considering martial arts. Reading books and watching films can show the extreme side of martial arts, but the truth is that you will learn how to defend yourself if you have to. For many people, this is the most important reason to take up martial arts.
